How do I build a garden on my balcony?

I live in an apartment with a balcony. I would like to grow my own vegetables and herbs such as cilantro. How do I build a Vegetable Garden on my balcony. Lots of sun shines on my balcony in the morning and some to none by mid-afternoon/evening. I appreciate your gardening wisdom.

You need to use individual pots and boxes. You need them as large as possible, but you need to be able to move them when they are full of dirt, so don’t go over the top. Don’t forget, you have to get those sacks of potting soil up to your apartment. Make sure that you water frequently. On hot summer days, plants dry out very fast. Don’t be too ambitious to start out with. Try a few pots of Herbs and patio-type tomatoes and peppers, then build up each year.

Planting a Bag Garden for Quick Temporary Production

Sometimes you have a situation were you don’t have time to dig a bed. Sometimes the spring passes before you can’t get Planting. In our situation we have all that and more.

We didn’t get our moved accomplished until June, then I had to leave for two weeks to enjoy a promised vacaiton with the most supportive and understanding wife in the world. So I found myself in late June with nothing planted, the solution a bag garden.

Basically I took the absolute worst spot on my land soil wise and laid out some bags of top soil, built a trellis with some existing pines and planted some fast growing summer crops.

The goal is simply to provide us with some production while we spend the rest of the summer doing soil improvements for fall Gardening. The video below is the results after about 4-5 weeks of growth.
